Wheelchair Battery Maintenace – Do's & Don'ts

When it comes to wheelchair batteries, there are a few things you should always do, and a few things you should avoid.

Always make sure your battery is fully charged. This will help ensure that your wheelchair has enough power to get you where you need to go. Also, keep your battery clean. A build-up of dirt and grime can cause your battery to lose power and performance over time. Avoid exposing your battery to extreme temperatures, as this can damage the cells and shorten its lifespan.

Assuming you have a basic understanding of how a wheelchair battery functions, let’s get into some do’s and don’ts to help prolong the life of your battery.

Do's:
- Read the manual that came with your wheelchair or power scooter. Each type of equipment is different and requires specific care when it comes to charging and maintenance.
- Invest in a good quality charger that is compatible with your battery type.
- Make sure to charge your battery regularly, even if you haven’t used your wheelchair or power scooter. A full charge should be performed every 30 days to keep the battery healthy.
- When storing your wheelchair or power scooter for long periods of time, disconnect the batteries and store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- If you notice any damage to your battery such as cracks, leaks, or swelling, stop using it immediately and contact a qualified technician for replacement or repair.

Don'ts:
- Attempt to open or disassemble your battery. This can be extremely dangerous and void any warranties you may have.
- Charge your battery in extreme temperatures, either hot or cold. It’s best to keep the charger and battery in a temperature between 50°F – 77°F (10°C – 25°C) during charging.
- Leave your charger plugged in for extended periods of time without monitoring.
